Linda Holiday
Juerg Steiner
Jack Wada
Linda Holiday, 6th Dan
Chief Instructor, Aikido of Santa Cruz, California
Linda Holiday
began her study of Aikido in Santa Cruz in 1970.
She trained intensively in Japan for several years in the 70's,
and she is a close student of Motomichi Anno Sensei, current
chief instructor of the Kumano Juku Dojo in Shingu. For the
last three decades Linda Sensei has devoted herself to teaching
and leadership of Aikido of Santa Cruz (formerly North Bay Aikido)
and teaching seminars in other dojos as well. As a translator,
Linda Sensei has made a special study of Osensei's words,
and she consistently focuses on the key concepts of Osensei's
vision of Aikido in a down-to-earth way. Her classes are
known for their physical vigor, misogi purification, and
inclusive community spirit.
Juerg Steiner, 6th Dan
Chief Instructor, Aikido Centre Kumano, Biel-Bienne, Switzerland
Juerg Steiner
began his study of Aikido in 1980.
He subsequently lived for 12 years in Shingu, Japan,
training intensively at the Kumano Juku Dojo under
Hikitsuchi Sensei (10th dan) and Anno Sensei (8th dan).
Juerg Sensei leads seminars in northern Europe and in
Australia, and returns to Japan each year to pursue his
training. He is fluent in German, French, Japanese, and
English. His presence will bring a wonderful international
breadth to our Retreat this year. In addition to teaching
Aikido and running a dojo, Juerg works in the healing arts
in a variety of modalities and he is an
avid windsurfer.
Jack Wada, 6th Dan
Chief Instructor, Aikido of San Jose, California
Since beginning his training here in Santa Cruz in 1969,
Jack Wada
has dedicated his life to the integration of
physical and spiritual practice in Aikido. He first
traveled to train intensively in Japan in 1973. His close
relationship with numerous teachers who studied directly
with Osensei has informed and inspired him. Jack Sensei's
deeply based and refined technique, and his long years of
weapons training and meditative practices, make him a
tremendous resource. He continues to teach regularly at
his dojo and at seminars, and we welcome him back to our
Summer Retreat. Jack Sensei's articulate, insightful
teaching style opens up areas of profound inquiry for
Aikidoists of all levels.
Mary Heiny has been an integral part of each Santa Cruz Aikido Summer
Retreat since it began 15 years ago. The good news is that Mary Heiny
Sensei's recent surgery was successful, and she is recovering nicely in
Seattle. However, Mary Sensei is heeding her doctor's latest advice about
trying too much too soon, and has decided that she should not travel to
Santa Cruz to co-teach at the retreat this year.
Mary Sensei will continue her recovery from hip replacement surgery in
Seattle where she is closer to her medical care and rehabilitative
resources. Mary Sensei sends her best to all of you and expresses her
confidence that this year's retreat will be just as wonderful as all the
previous Santa Cruz Summer Retreats. We can support her "hard training" by
continuing the tradition of the Santa Cruz Summer Retreat that she has
supported and co-taught for the last fifteen years.
Linda Holiday Sensei has arranged for
Danielle Smith Sensei and
Betsy Hill Sensei
to lend their energy and support by each
instructing a special class at the retreat. Please join us in welcoming
them.
The Santa Cruz Aikido Summer Retreat generates a training
atmosphere of sincerity and mutual respect. We are committed
to equal opportunity for Aikidoists of any gender, race,
nationality, sexual orientation or rank. We all benefit from
the skills and insight of experienced practitioners while
welcoming and progressing with newer students of the art.
In coming together for the 15th Annual Summer Retreat, we
reaffirm the goal of integrating body, mind, and spirit
in our practice. The Retreat offers a full daily schedule
of general keiko (training) taught by four skillful and
dedicated 6th dan Aikido instructors. In addition, the
retreat includes opportunities for meditation, chanting,
and Aiki weapons practice. . . time to train, talk, eat, and
dance together. . . many ways to deepen our experience of
Aiki community and our personal development as students on
The Way of Harmony.
The 2008 Summer Retreat will return to the University
of California, Santa Cruz campus, with its redwood
forests and sweeping views of the Monterey Bay.
With residential housing and food service a short
walk from the training location, our goal is to
strengthen community spirit as we immerse ourselves
in the inspiring practice of Aikido. University
facilities also include a 50 meter pool, weight room,
tennis courts and hiking and bike trails.
