About the Retreat

The Santa Cruz Retreat generates a training atmosphere of sincerity and mutual respect. We are committed to equal opportunity for Aikidoists of any gender, race, sexual orientation or rank. We all benefit from the skills and insight of experienced practitioners while welcoming and progressing with newer students of the art. In coming together for the 12th Annual Summer Retreat, we reaffirm the goal of integrating body, mind, and spirit in our practice. In addition to numerous daily opportunities for general keiko (training), the Retreat offers classes in meditation, misogi, and chanting, opportunities to train outdoors, and an evening banquet at North Bay Aikido's spacious dojo facility… many ways to deepen our experience of Aiki community and our personal development as students on "The Way of Harmony."

Location

The 2005 Summer Retreat will be held at the University of California, Santa Cruz campus with its redwood forests and sweeping views of the Monterey Bay. Facilities include a 50 meter pool, weight room, tennis courts and hiking and bike trails.

Residents: Arriving and Checking In at UCSC

Please make every effort to arrive within the two-hour check-in/registration period of 2-4pm, Wednesday July 6th. You will check-in with North Bay Aikido, as well as register with UCSC as a resident and receive all the information needed for your stay.

Directions from base of UC Santa Cruz campus:

At the base of campus, the intersection of Bay and High Streets, turn left on High Street towards the West Entrance. Follow High Street (also called Empire Grade) and turn right into the West Entrance (Heller Drive). Travelling on Heller, turn left into the Porter/Kresge College area after the third stop sign. Follow the road up the short hill and turn right into parking lot #124 where you will park in an unmarked space. Cross the street to the Porter College circle and walk straight past the administrations buildings on the left to the quad area. You will see the Conference Office on the left in the dining commons building; check in/registration will be at tables outside. Please leave luggage in your vehicle unless instructed otherwise.

If you cannot arrive within the designated 2-hour period, please let us know ASAP by emailing sretreat@northbayaikido.org, or calling 831-423-8326.

Residents arriving between 4pm-7pm should go to the Porter College Conference Office (at the Hungry Slug Café) to check in, receive your room key, meal card, parking permit etc. You will then need to take your car to the Conference Parking lot below College Eight, which is some distance from the residence apartments.

Residents arriving after 7pm will be stopped at the university entrance kiosk. The kiosk attendant will make arrangements to have a Community Safety Officer (CSO) meet you at Porter College (if you are not stopped, you may call 831-459-2100 yourself to ask for a CSO). The CSO will let you into your room, but you may not be given a room key at that time; you will need to register at 7am the next morning at the Conference Office. You will miss the early morning class, as you will need to get a parking permit into your car and move it to the Conference Lot ASAP to avoid being ticketed.

Residents arriving after 1am will be stopped at the university entrance kiosk and requested to make arrangements at a nearby hotel.

Late Arrivals still need to check in with North Bay Aikido retreat staff. Please allow extra time before the first class you plan to attend, and go to the Retreat Store in the West Field House to check-in with us.

Commuters: Arriving and Checking In

Please make every effort to arrive within the two-hour check-in/registration period of 2-4pm, Wednesday July 6th. You will check-in with North Bay Aikido & receive retreat information packets, as well as purchase your parking permit from UCSC.

Commuters arriving between 4pm-7pm Wednesday may go to the Porter College Conference Office (at the Hungry Slug Café) to purchase a retreat parking permit. It is recommended to park in a metered spot while you do this. You will then need to take your car to the Conference Parking lot below College Eight. To get to this lot from Porter, turn right out of the Porter/Kresge parking area, and go back towards the UCSC West Entrance. Turn left on Koshland Way into the lot.

Commuters arriving Thursday or later may go to the Porter College Conference Office between the hours of 7am-7pm to purchase a retreat parking permit. It is recommended to park in a metered spot while you do this. Park afterwards as described above. You may also purchase parking permits on a daily basis from the kiosk at the UCSC Main Entrance between 7am-5pm.

All Late Arrivals must check in with North Bay Aikido retreat staff before training. Please allow extra time before the first class you plan to attend, and go to the Retreat Store in the West Field House to check-in with us. If the store is closed, ask for help.

Items you may wish to bring...

  1. A padlock for the West Field House dressing room lockers. There is no other secure place to keep personal items at the retreat, and both the residence halls and parking lots are some distance from the retreat location in the West Field House.
  2. Comfortable walking shoes - the campus includes both flat and steep areas. The dining hall is farther from the retreat than in previous years.
  3. A jacket or sweater. In Santa Cruz, we never know when it might be foggy and quite chilly, even (especially!) in the middle of summer.
  4. Any Wooden Training Weapons that you might like to use in class, or for after hours training (reminder: Quiet Hours are in effect campus-wide 10pm-8am).
  5. A pillow for meditation classes.
  6. (commuters) Cash for meals at the dining hall, if you did not pre-order them (breakfast $6.95, lunch $8.50, dinner $9.00).
  7. (commuters) Towel - for the showers in the West Field House.
  8. (residents) Bathrobe - bathrooms in residence apartments are shared.
  9. (residents) An extra blanket if you tend to be cold at night.
  10. (residents) Alarm clock - whether to make the 6:30 am class, or just breakfast!

Finally, as usual for the last day or two of the retreat, we will make a table available for retreat participants to sell aikido-related items. If you are unsure if your items would be considered aikido-related, please call us at 831-423-8326 to confirm.
